Maag Food invested over one million euros in a new meat snack production line
13. May 2026Maag Food, the largest food industry company in Estonia, invested more than one million euros in the Tallegg production facility in Tabasalu, resulting in the launch of a new and unique meat snack production line in Estonia. Through this investment, the company expanded its production capacity in the rapidly growing snack category, improved the quality of its existing meat snacks, and introduced innovative high-protein meat bars to the market.
The cost of the new production equipment was approximately €920,000, and together with production facility modifications and other related expenses, the total investment exceeded one million euros. From project approval to product launch, the entire process took exactly one year — an exceptionally fast timeline for a food industry investment project. The line was established at the Tabasalu production unit, where all other Tallegg food products are also manufactured. The same line produces snacks and meat bars for the entire Baltic market under Maag Food’s brands Rakvere, Tallegg, Rīgas Miesnieks (Latvia), and Klaipėdos Maistas (Lithuania).
“Snacking has become a natural part of consumers’ everyday eating habits, but there is growing demand for products that are convenient, tasty, and nutritionally valuable. The new production line gives us the opportunity to develop higher-quality products in the meat snack category and to introduce an entirely new product category to our home markets in the form of meat bars,” said Janne Laik-Lõhmus, Product Development and Marketing Director at Maag Food.
A meat bar, or jerky bar, is typically an on-the-go snack — a convenient, portable, and healthy snack option that can be enjoyed while traveling, after exercise, or during a busy day. According to Laik-Lõhmus, the meat snack category still has significant growth potential, as consumers increasingly seek snacks that combine convenience, high protein content, and improved nutritional value. The new products contain 10–12 grams of protein per pack and approximately 30% less salt compared to the average products in the meat snack category.
“This was a technologically demanding project where it was crucial to precisely achieve the right product texture, dimensions, and production process. We conducted equipment tests in Germany and Spain and also brought part of the equipment to Estonia for trial runs. An investment like this strengthens the role of the Tabasalu production unit within Maag Food’s Baltic-wide manufacturing operations,” added Sille Villem, Product Development Manager. The new production line has the capacity to produce up to 10,000 meat bars per hour and package up to 70 packs per minute. The packaging line is capable of producing up to 1.5 million packs per month. To ensure product safety and quality, the factory laboratory was also upgraded with new methodologies, bringing laboratory testing and quality control to an entirely new level.
