Maag Food’s Põlva Production Unit Celebrated Its 60th Anniversary

20. October 2025

On October 1st, 2025, Maag Food’s Põlva dairy plant celebrated its 60th anniversary with an event held in the courtyard of the facility. In addition to everything else, a gift to the community was unveiled, and the plant’s employees were recognized.

According to Tea Mey, Head of the Põlva Production Unit, the celebration went very well. “Everything ran smoothly and the evening passed in a cheerful mood. It seemed that everyone had a great time. In total, around 150 people gathered to celebrate – alongside our own team, there were also 50 guests.” Tea noted that the event was filled with emotion, and it carried extra weight because such a celebration had never been held in this format, right in front of the factory. “Since our gift to the community was a timeline (an art project reflecting the activities of the Põlva plant over 60 years, see photos – ed.), we chose this particular location because of where the artwork is situated. The weather also blessed us – the sun was shining, the weather was beautiful, and throughout the evening there was a sense of positive energy and excitement.”

Speaking of the timeline, Tea had nothing but praise for the idea and its creators. “The piece was created by Pallas Art School lecturer and artist Kristjan Bachman (Babach OÜ) and designer Martin Nurm (Seri Disain OÜ). The result is a dignified and timeless work that tells the story of the Põlva dairy industry and highlights the brands under which Põlva-made products have reached consumers over the years.” It is truly a memorable, historic, and special gift to the community that will last and is meant to be admired by all.

The most moving moment of the day, according to Tea, was the recognition of work anniversaries. This time, there were 21 employees celebrating their milestones, and their contribution and dedication were acknowledged. “For each anniversary celebrant, we had collected a character description from their closest colleagues, which the host read out loud. This brought tears to more than a few eyes and truly touched everyone. We definitely want to keep this tradition going in the future.”

The evening was filled with energy and excitement. For example, well-known entrepreneur Oleg Gross arrived with some guests by helicopter! “Yes, it’s true,” Tea laughed. “Oleg Gross’s helicopter landing created a buzz among both attendees and passersby. Also, the impressive Tere-branded milk truck parked in front of the plant drew attention from afar, and quite a few locals came by with their children, thinking a festival was taking place in town. In front of the building, guests were greeted by a giant inflatable MuuMuu cow and a cow mascot hopping around, adding playfulness and joy to the event. The food was provided by YliCOOL Catering, who prepared delicious snacks using products from the Põlva plant, demonstrating both creativity and great taste. Musical entertainment was provided by the band “Kõhukesed,” whose lively energy kept spirits high, and a fun quiz added to the excitement. Some even learned that the band Ummamuudu originated from the Põlva dairy industry and that the first Põlva beauty pageant took place in the plant’s hall – so popular that it lasted two days!” Tea shared.

The Põlva plant’s employees were very pleased with the event, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. “It was especially touching to see how helpful everyone was – at the end of the evening, the last guests joined in the clean-up, everyone picked up something to help, and within half an hour, the whole area was tidied and ready for the next workday. The beautiful autumn sunset put a perfect finishing touch on the evening.”

The Põlva Production Unit also selected its Heartfelt Contributor of the Year 2025. This honorable title went to Marika Tensing, who has been working at the Põlva plant since 1988. Her current position is system operator. “Marika started in the milk powder department and has become a great asset to the plant with her experience and knowledge. When production changed, she adapted quickly and learned new skills in the dairy products department,” said Tea. “Marika is cheerful, helpful, and always ready to support others. Her positive attitude and dedication are an example to everyone. Congratulations to all this year’s work anniversary celebrants! I am truly thankful for and proud of my Põlva team,” Tea concluded.
